The Online Resource for Skiing Families
Things to Know Before You Go
1. How Old Should Your Child Be Before You Take Them Skiing or
Boarding?
A good general rule is that children can be ready to start skiing as young as 3 and
boarding as young as 5. Consult the ski school for your resort while you are in
your trip planning phase and find out what their policies and recommendations
are. Our advice is to start early encouraging a love of skiing and know how to
keep your family safe on the slopes. If your child is too young to ski most resorts
have quality daycare services.
2. When is the Best Time To Go?
You can get great deals early and late in the season, but beware you may not
experience the best snow. December, January, February and early March are your
best bets for peak conditions. Christmas and Spring Break holidays are particular fun
times to ski, but keep in mind holidays usually mean bigger crowds and higher prices.
3. Should Your Child Take Lessons?
Yes. Even if your child has been skiing before a refresher lesson is usually a good
idea. And just because you are a great skier doesn't mean you are the best one to
teach your child how to ski or board. Also, make sure you know ahead of time exactly
what skills your child will learn in ski school. We highly suggest you make sure your
child learns how to get on and off the ski lift while in ski school!
4. Should Your Child Wear a Helmet?
Yes. While the risk of injury in skiing and snowboarding compares favorably with other
recreational sports, the risk still exists. Dr. Michael P. Pietrzak, a board certified
emergency medicine specialist and executive director of the International Brain
Injury Association, says helmets provide significant protection and significantly
reduce the potential for injury. For more information, read an article by Dr. Pietrzak
