skiing is far from the easiest vacation you can take (especially if you try to do it alone), but with good planning you can certainly reduce the stress. Here are some tips:
Take advantage of ski lessons. Even if you are a great skier it can very frustrating to try to teach your child to ski. If you aren't an experienced skier, taking ski lessons yourself is also a good idea.
Regarding lessons, know that they can be expensive and make sure you talk to the instructors so you know what exactly what your children will be taught. Ensure that your child will learn how to get on and off the lift--you definitely don't want to teach them those skills yourself.
Make sure your lodging is convenient to the slopes. If you can afford it and it's available, opt for ski-in/ski-out accommodations. Lugging your equipment along with your child's equipment can be extremely tiring, especially if you're not used to the higher elevations. Consider storing your skis or boards, poles and boots overnight at the slopes, they usually offer secure storage facilities.
Know our safety tips and be sure your kids know how to be safe on the slopes.
If you're travelling with a child too young to ski be sure to plan ahead to ensure that adequate daycare services are available. Most good ski resorts have great day care programs, but be prepared--they can be expensive.
Consider travelling with another family. You may be able to save on lodging, the kids will enjoy being with one another, the adults can take turns with kid-duties.
Take advantage of the Internet to get to know the town and resort you will be visiting ahead of time. Think about dining, shopping and other off-the- slope activities you may want to take advantage of.
If you are driving to your destination:
- Download and print all of your directions ahead of time. - Keep track of road conditions, especially near mountain passes. - Make sure your vehicle is capable of making the trip. - Be prepared to drive in icy conditions.
